Listen to Obituary

Richard P Finlayson, beloved husband, father and brother, returned to his Heavenly Father on October 15, 2026. He was at home and surrounded by his loving family. Richard was 87 years old.

Richard was born on October 5, 1939 in Provo, Utah. He was the third child of Earl Taylor Finlayson and Chloe Pyper Finlayson. With two older sisters, Richard was the eldest son. As their family grew, they welcomed five additional sons.

Richard was a graduate of Provo High School. At the age of 17 he answered the call to serve his country by joining the Army National Guard. Doing a job he truly loved, he served with dedication for 42 years. He continued in civil service for an additional 10 years working at Hill Air Force Base. After retiring from Hill Air Force Base, Richard continued serving his community driving a school bus for Morgan School District.

One of the most meaningful chapters of Richard’s life began when he met his sweetheart, Janice Guymon. While they were both serving in the military, they had a chance encounter. A small-town girl from Idaho and a tall handsome man met at an LDS church meeting in Aberdeen, MD. They were married on April 14, 1961. In 1974 they were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake temple. Their marriage was built on love, faith, and a deep commitment to one another. They were blessed with 6 children. Together, they created a life filled with cherished memories, family, and a love that endured 65 years.

Richard deeply loved his family and cherished his beloved wife, Janice. A faithful servant of Jesus Christ, he lived his life with faith, love, and devotion to those closest to him. Richard and Janice shared a special bond, doing everything together and enjoying traveling to visit their children and grandchildren. The time they spent together and the memories they made with their family were among life’s greatest blessings. His family continued to grow over the years, bringing him the joy of 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were a treasured part of his life and a lasting reflection of the love he shared with his family.

Richard loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed camping, fishing, and deer hunting with his siblings and family. He had a wonderful sense of humor and a playful spirit that brought laughter and joy to those around him. Always willing to lend a helping hand, Richard generously shared his knowledge and patiently guided others through life’s challenges. Whether someone needed advice, encouragement, or help with a mechanical problem, Richard was always there. If something was broken, he could fix it!

Richard is survived by his wife Janice, his children Vicki (Layne) Paul of Washington, Brian (Brooke) Finlayson of Utah, Brenda (Todd) Bingham of Utah, Valerie Finlayson of Utah, Karla (Chris) Wegner of Utah, Kristy (Mike) Ware of Utah, his brothers Keith (Carolyn) Finlayson, Merril Finlayson, Dan (Connie) Finlayson and sister-in-law Michelle Finlayson.

He was preceded in death by his parents Earl and Chloe, two sisters Carol Larsen and Colleen Howard, two brothers Clair Finlayson and Barton Finlayson, two brothers-in-law Lenord Larsen and Larry Howard, and sister-in-law Jill Finlayson.

He will be remembered and missed by all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
