Michael Harris Nelson, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on July 26, 2025, in Ogden, Utah, due to complications related to heart failure. Born on April 24, 1958, in Brigham City, Utah, Michael lived a life full of resilience and passion, leaving a lasting imprint on those who had the privilege of knowing him.
He was a proud graduate of Morgan High School, where he achieved valedictorian status in the class of 1976. He then served a misssion for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the North Carolina, Greensboro Mission. He then continued his studies at Weber State University, earning a Bachelor's degree. His education underscored his commitment to learning and personal growth, which he carried throughout his life. He worked for nearly 40-years at the Internal Revenue Service, Michael exemplified dedication and hard work. He recieved a $1500 reward for written instructions explaining the Electronic Filing System. (ELF)
Michael's enduring legacy extends beyond his professional accomplishments. Michael devoted himself to raising his two daughters, Vanessa Rose Nelson and Alicia Merie Nelson Bell, instilling in them a myriad of lessons, including how to play chess. He had a unique ability to connect with others, sweet-talking young boys into respecting and protecting his daughters, showcasing his protective and caring nature. He was a cherished family man who took great joy in being a grandpa. He loved having his grandchildren share stories about their toys, illuminating his days with their laughter and innocence.
An inspirational fighter, Michael overcame significant challenges throughout his life. He demonstrated remarkable resilience after surviving dying in a motorcycle accident, leaving him with traumatic brain injuries that would affect him the rest of his life, enduring five strokes, and gradually losing his sight due to retinitis pigmentosa and choroideremia. Despite these trials, Michael's spirit remained unbroken, fueled by the unwavering love of his daughters and grandchildren, who kept him motivated as he faced adversities that most will never understand.
Outside of his family life, Michael had a multitude of interests. He was a rock, stock, and flower enthusiast, often taking time to appreciate the beauty of nature. His love for animals was evident, especially in his relationships with his childhood dog, Champ, and later, his cats, Streak and Blizzard. Michael enjoyed watching crime shows, as well as history, science, and nature programs, demonstrating a thirst for knowledge and entertainment. He was also an active member of the Goldenspike Gem and Mineral Society, where he continued to pursue his passion for rockhounding.
Michael's early years were marked by athletic achievements, where he shone as a wrestler and football player in high school and embraced his competitive spirit as an avid church ball player. He also enjoyed barrel racing with his horse, Little Joe, and participated in the Junior Posse.
His memory will be cherished by his daughters, Vanessa Rose Nelson and Alicia Merie Nelson Bell, along with her husband Brandon Bell, and their children, Mateusz Don Bell and Lindy Lue Bell. Michael's sister, Debra Taylor, and many friends especially his cousin Monte Moore and William "Bill" Webster. He was preceded in death by his mother, JoAn Rae Harris Hamson.
Michael's presence will be sorely missed but never forgotten, as he exemplified the virtues of perseverance, love, and kindness. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched and in the countless memories shared. A viewing will be held on August 2, 2025, at Walker Mortuary in Morgan, Utah, from 10:00 AM to 10:45 AM, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM.
