H. Larry Calderwood passed away on September 2, 2024, after living a full and grand life of 90 years! He was born October 16, 1933, to Herschel Edward & Hazel Wright Calderwood. He was the youngest of 5 children and spoiled by his four older sisters - Beth Calderwood, Fern (Don) Gibbons, Bonnie Jean Calderwood and JoAnn (Rey) Arnold. Growing up in Coalville, Larry's childhood was spent amidst the simple joys of farm life, playing Rook, raising sheep and chickens, and cutting hay.
In his youth he was part of the “Boy’s Chorus” and sang all over the region. He loved to sing and had a splendid baritone voice. As a teenager, Larry developed a love for basketball, football, and particularly baseball, where he excelled as a catcher and later as a first baseman.
One night, while playing a game of “kick the can” he met the delightful Imogene Lythgoe. They dated and DANCED all through high school as she wore his school ring around her neck. After graduating from North Summit High School, Larry joined the Army in 1954. During a furlough that same year, he married Imogene in the Salt Lake Temple, and the newlyweds spent a year in Germany while Larry served his country.
Larry attended Utah State, worked for Mountain Fuel, Devil’s Slide, Sim’s Market, Freed Finance, and then decided on a 25-year career with the UDOT Engineers in Wanship where he forged many life-long friendships. Larry & Imogene prayed for children and after six years were eventually blessed with five vibrant children: Julie Marie, Jana Lee, Michael Larry, Jill Ruth, and Mark H.
For 40 years, the Calderwoods made their home in Coalville, where they raised their family. Larry was a loyal friend with many hunting buddies who filled their old army tent every year near Whitney Reservoir. One of his hobbies was ranching. He would circle his small herd of cows for hours taking meticulous notes of each cow and calf pair.
Later, Larry & Imogene built a new home in Henefer in Imogene’s father’s sheep pasture and have lived there for 31 years where Larry loved family gatherings on Sunday evenings, laughing, telling stories, eating, and teasing.
Larry was an avid Jazz fan and he and Coach Sloan are working out their differences now.
Larry and Imogene served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Calgary, Canada, and also enjoyed 15 years of traveling ‘south’ with their trailer buddies, creating memories that would last a lifetime.
Larry’s life was filled with love, laughter, and countless memories that will be treasured by all who knew him. He had a knack for making people feel comfortable around him and was always concerned about others feelings. He loved a good laugh and always made time to visit with friends and family.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents, his four sisters, and his grandson, Kameron Orgill. He is survived by his loving wife Imogene of 70 years!, his children: Julie (Jeff) Orgill, Jana (Mark) Loucks, Mike (Angie) Calderwood, Jill (Dennis) VanAusdaul, and Mark (Leslie) Calderwood, 19 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
