James left this world for the big concert in the sky on May 10th, 2026. James was born September 27, 1952 in Coalville Utah to Warren and Wanda Spriggs.
James grew up on the family farm in Hoytsville Utah with his brother Alan and sister Jeannine where he learned how to work hard and play even harder. James, being the youngest of the three, was the self-proclaimed “Black Sheep” and known to be the wild child.
James attended both Weber State and Utah State Universities studying Forestry, and Forest Management. He later moved to Oregon, where he worked for the U.S. Forest Service. He later returned home to Utah, and worked for Reese’s Construction where he was able to travel throughout several states, making many very close friends.
One of James favorite pastimes was to spend time at the family cabin that he built alongside his brother Alan. He enjoyed putting his nieces and nephews to work, and tormenting and bossing all that were there; all while listening to his favorite tunes from the Grateful Dead, and watching his faithful canine companion Sugar Magnolia “Maggie” chase away all the chipmunks in the area. James was an amazing cook, and with his exquisite culinary skills, he would make elaborate meals for his friends and family of his special “pork butt” and stuffed mushrooms. Maggie’s favorite was his "beer can" chicken, and was known to steal the whole dinner when James wasn’t paying attention, or as he would say “she was a very well-fed pup.”
Family was most important to James and he was very close to his nieces and nephews; and he was also extremely proud to have a grandson who is named after him.
James, we will miss your one-of-a-kind chaos, your humor, and most of all, your deviled eggs.
As James would say “Peace, Love and Rock’n-Roll, Janis Joplin and all that shit”.
We will see you on the flip side, Little Hippy.
In true James's style grab your best concert, tie dye, or flannel shirt, and come share your favorite stories about this happy little hippy with us, for a viewing/celebration of James’s life. Friday, May 29th, at the Ledges Event Center at 202 Park Rd, Coalville, Utah, from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
The Family would like to give a special thanks to Janette Vernon PA-C, Elsie Ercanbrack at Quality Home Health and Hospice, and the wonderful staff at Family Tree Assisted Living for all their kindness and care towards James
