James Lee Barker

James Lee Barker, of Utah, passed away on July 21, 2026, at the age of 73.

Born on December 10, 1952, in Devil's Slide, Utah, James graduated from Morgan High School in 1971, where he played football and basketball. Even as a young man, he was known as a protector, always standing up for his classmates. He loved the outdoors and often reminisced about deer hunting and fishing trips to Lost Creek. That same steady, independent spirit followed him throughout his life.

A lifelong Harley rider, James was once invited to join the Sundowners Motorcycle Club. True to his independent nature, he declined the invitation, so they jokingly formed a club just for him: the Loners Club. He remained its one and only member.

James worked in the mines and on the railroad before beginning a 35-year career at Hill Air Force Base. He retired in 2008, an occasion marked by a flag flown over the Utah State Capitol in his honor. During his years at Hill, he designed a crucial component for military equipment, work that reflected the quiet competence, ingenuity, and pride he brought to everything he did.

On December 5, 1983, James married Jenny, the love of his life. Together they built a life centered on family. After retirement, he found his greatest joy in the simple things—working in the garden with his grandchildren, spending time with family, catching up with friends, and making the occasional trip to the store.

James was preceded in death by his father, Ruel Barker; his brother, Charles Barker; and his grandson, Sunny Smith.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jenny; his children, Chad (Rachel), Emily (Wes), Jamie (Casey), Mandy, and Jacob; his mother, Katherine; his sisters, Wanda and Vicky; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

James will be remembered for his protective heart, his independent spirit, his quiet strength, and the unwavering love he showed to his family and friends. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the family he cherished.
