Our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend returned to his heavenly home on November 21, 2012, in St. George, Utah, following a courageous battle with bladder cancer.
Gerald was born in Myton, Utah, on December 22, 1936, to James Don Giles and Ellen Flora Manning. He and his siblings were raised among grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins, and Gerald helped his family with chores and their livelihood while excelling in school, hunting, and participating in sports, especially baseball. He graduated from Union High School, attended the U of U, and graduated from Utah State University with his bachelor's degree in accounting in 1961.
On July 12, 1957, Gerald married Jolene Nielsen in the Logan LDS temple. He and Jolene raised their three daughters Julie, Karen Ann, and Pamela, in Pomona, Al Hambra, and San Luis Obispo, California, and North Ogden, Utah. He and Jolene later divorced.
Gerald retired from IRS in Ogden, Utah, having worked as a revenue agent, Correspondence Chief, Security Chief, and agent in exam classification. He then fulfilled a second career as a real estate agent.
On June 3, 2006, Gerald married Lucile Barnes Wardell in Morgan, Utah, and became a stepfather to five children: Julie, Wess, Todd, Dan, and Ted. He and his sweetheart enjoyed traveling, taking scenic drives, golfing, walking, bicycling, following sports teams, studying scriptures, and appreciating the wildlife, views of the city, red rocks, and Virgin River from their St. George patio.
Gerald will be best remembered for his strength and perseverance, sense of humor, example of hard work, faith in his Savior, big heart, generous spirit, and active lifestyle. He especially loved baseball, having played as a youth and adult in church and city leagues. He rooted energetically for his Boston Red Sox all his life. Above all, Gerald loved his wife and family. His love and devotion to them is his greatest legacy. In summers, they resided in Morgan and in St. George in winters.
Gerald and Lucy attended the Calgary Christian Church in St. George, and together they enjoyed the fellowship of the members. Comfort comes from the scripture in John 3:16. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his angel wife Lucile Giles; children: Julie (Harold) Muir of Clinton, Karen Ann (Kendall) Madsen of West Jordan, and Pamela (Eric) Lee of Layton; stepchildren: Julie (David) Messerly of Huntsville, Wess (Mary) Wardell, Todd (Traca) Wardell , Dan (Angie) Wardell and Ted (Debbie) Wardell all of Morgan; 17 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; siblings Mary Ellen Kitchen of Murray and Paul A. Giles of Murray. They will miss him greatly. The family wishes to thank his wonderful doctors, nurses, medical staff of Dr. Te's office and Dixie Home Hospice for the loving care and support they gave Gerald and Lucy in the past weeks and years. A special thanks to Kathy Swenson, his hospice nurse, for her tender care. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 26, 2012, at 12 noon at Morgan North Stake Center, 2755 W. Old Hwy Road. A viewing will be held Sunday from 6 to 8 pm at Walker Mortuary in Morgan, Utah and Monday from 11 to 11:45 am at the church prior to the services. Interment will follow at the Milton Cemetery.
