Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Dr. Alonzo Earl McCain, passed away on July 19, 2025, at the age of 88, surrounded by the love and comfort of his family.
Earl was born in a small log cabin on Inauguration Day, the second for President Franklin D. Roosevelt, January 20, 1937, in Johnson County, Nebraska to Lawrence Elliott McCain and Dorothy Mae Abbott. Earl graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1954. Following high school, Earl earned his Bachelor of Science at Peru State College in Nebraska in 1958, and his Master’s Degree at New Mexico Highlands University in 1959.
In 1961, Earl met Carole Mink at Colorado State College when Carole’s roommate had a date with one of Earl’s roommates. Carole recalls that “the tall lanky roommates matched up, and the short ones matched up,” leaving Carole and Earl. Earl and Carole were married June 2, 1962. They spent 63 beautiful years together and raised 4 wonderful children.
Earl and Carole moved to Mountain Green in 1969, to pursue teaching secondary education at Weber State. He later earned his Doctorate Degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1972. Earl enjoyed many years at Weber State teaching secondary education specializing in social studies, student teaching, and running the shot clock for the men’s basketball team and the game clock for the football team.
Earl served faithfully in many callings as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints including years as a Bishop’s Counselor, High Councilor, and his favorite calling of Scout Master. While Scout Master Earl was able to take his family to Philmont Scout Ranch and later take all three of his sons to the National Scout Jamboree in Virginia in 1985. He was awarded the Silver Beaver for his long service to Scouting. His quiet strength and willingness to serve reflected a deep and abiding testimony. He and Carole served together in the Church’s Ogden Inner-City Mission, blessing lives through their shared compassion. Earl also served faithfully in community organizations as Lion’s Club President, Morgan School Board President, Utah State School Board, and as an appointee by Utah’s Governor to the Board of Trustees of the Utah College of Applied Technology.
Above all, Earl was a devoted husband and proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was happiest surrounded by family. He had quite the sweet tooth. He loved peanut M&Ms and Diet Coke and always kept plenty of each on hand.
Earl is survived by his wife Carole and their four children: Matthew (Kaoru), Amy (Robb) Boden, Andrew (Tammy) and John (Sherry); eight grandchildren: Cambria (Kevin) Wright, Nikki (Michael) Woolsey, Sean McCain, Michael (Megan) McCain, Ryan (Savannah) Boden, Sami (Shaun) Allen, Joshua (Maygan) McCain, and Sydney McCain; and seven great-grandchildren: Cohen, Benson and Emmy Wright, Ethan and Dawson Woolsey, and Emery and Zach Allen - each of whom was his pride and joy.
Earl is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Dorothy McCain, his in-laws Clifford and Secret Mink, his sister Mary Naber and nephew Larry Earl Naber.
